Junior Firefighters

Ballston Spa Junior Firefighter Program

The Ballston Spa Fire Department Junior Firefighter Program was started in the middle of 2010 in order to provide young men and women, ages 16 and 17, the opportunity to learn about the skill of firefighting. These firefighters are mentored by adult advisors from the ranks of the Ballston Spa Fire Department. They drill on Wednesday nights in the same manner as those over 18. Junior Firefighters get to train with BSFD Firefighters on topics including; hose evolutions, ladder techniques, proper use of tools and equipment, and other related skill.  Additionally, they are provided with turnout gear, attend NYS training classes, respond to calls, and help with events in and around the firehouses. Safety comes first, so there are some things Junior Firefighters are not allowed to do until they are 18. School is a priority and we make sure that this remains true. The program has been very successful with eighteen young adults joining and eight already moving up to the adult ranks of our fire department and beyond.  If you’re interested in taking the next step, please reach out to us here.

There is currently college tuition assistance available through F.A.S.N.Y. for those attending community college and maintaining the requirements of their firehouse. More information can be found here.
